What’s New at HydroVision 2019: Knowledge Hubs in-depth

You asked. We delivered. For the first-time ever, we’re taking key insights out of the classroom and into the exhibition hall with Knowledge Hubs.

Knowledge is power. You’ve probably heard that phrase on a TV show (or twenty), and it’s absolutely true. HydroVision International has always been a place where connections are made and insights are shared. It’s kind of our thing. This year we’re taking it to the next level with an exciting, experience-enhancing new feature — Knowledge Hubs.

Knowledge Hubs give you access to more insight-based content than ever before. We created Knowledge Hubs so you can learn about topics that might not fit in an existing track, topics we don’t normally cover, and new technologies that impact the industry.

So what else makes our new Knowledge Hubs so awesome? Here’s what you need to know:

For the first time ever, we’re taking insight-based content out of the classrooms and into the exhibition hall. While HydroVision has always had educational sessions, this is the first time we’re presenting them in the exhibition hall. Why? Easy. It increases participation and attendance, bringing more knowledge to more people.

Everyone is invited! Attendees. Visitors. Booth staff. Delegates. You name it, you’re invited. We believe that by making our Knowledge Hubs free and open, we’re making knowledge more accessible to more people.

We will be hosting three Knowledge Hubs, each featuring multiple sessions, focusing on the topics you’ve told us are the ones you most want to cover. Our three Knowledge Hubs this year are Energy Storage & Grid Issues, Learning From Case Studies, and Technology Horizons. Here are the featured sessions.

Session 1L — Energy Storage and Grid Issues: Glimpse the Grid of the Future

Tuesday, July 23, 4:30pm-5:30pm

What will the transmission grid look like as energy sources worldwide continue to evolve? Hear from experts about modernization, big data and more. Learn more.

Session 2L — Energy Storage and Grid Issues: Integrating Hydropower and Energy Storage

Wednesday, July 24, 10:30am-11:30am

While pumped-storage hydro accounts for more than 95% of all current energy storage capacity, hear how hybrid technology systems can provide greater flexibility and benefits. Learn more.

Session 5L — Energy Storage and Grid Issues: The Vital Need for Grid Stability

Thursday, July 25, 11:00am-12:00pm

Hydropower is an essential baseload resource that provides valuable grid stabilizing services. Hear about hydroelectricity and grid stability, frequency control and more. Learn more.

Find out more about our other sessions in Energy Storage and Grid Issues here.

So this is cool: we created this hub because you asked for it. Attendees have requested sessions that take a deeper dive and talk more in-depth about important topics. This isn’t a 5,000-ft. view. No, we’re getting in the weeds. Hey, some people like driving cars, some people like popping open the hood and seeing how the engine works. If you’re the latter (which if you’re reading this, you probably are) this hub is for you!

Session 2K — Learning from Case Studies: Best Practices for Plant Rehabilitation and Modernization

Wednesday, July 24, 10:30am-11:30am

Hear how rehabilitating and modernizing aging plants and equipment can provide benefits — and create challenges — with results gained and lessons learned. Learn more.

Session 3K — Learning from Case Studies: Dealing with Electrical Issues

Wednesday, July 24, 12:00pm-1:00pm

With generators and other electrical components constantly evolving, hear the best practices for dealing with electrical issues. Learn more.

Session 6K — Learning from Case Studies: Cost-Effective Small Hydro Installations Worldwide

Thursday, July 25, 1:00pm-2:00pm

See how small, hydro-facilities can serve local communities with a low-impact, cost-effective source of renewable electricity. Learn more.

Find out more about the other sessions in Learning From Case Studies here.

Session 1M — Technology Horizons: New Frontiers in Marine Energy

Tuesday, July 23, 4:30pm-5:30pm

Hear about the challenges and opportunities in the next frontier in waterpower — generating energy from ocean waves and tides. Learn more.

Session 2M — Technology Horizons: The Future of Cybersecurity and Cyber Compliance

Wednesday, July 24, 10:30am-11:30am

Find out more about the other sessions in Technology Horizons here.

Pretty cool, right? Knowledge Hubs are another reason HydroVision International will be better than ever in 2019. This exciting new feature was created because of attendees’ suggestions, so let us know which session you’re most excited about.

In the meantime, be sure to check back here often for news, insights and updates on the event, and the hydro industry.

See you in Portland!
