Denver, Colorado, USA - Home to HYDROVISION 2022!

Colorado, USA is known to many as a beautiful vacation destination, but it’s also got a rich connection to the hydroelectric power industry.

In fact, more than 200 rivers flow through Colorado, and the first AC hydroelectric generating plant in the world, Ames, was built more than 100 years ago near Telluride, CO.

There are many power producers in the state, with hydro plants of all sizes. These include the Bureau of Reclamation, City of Boulder, Colorado Springs Utilities, Denver Water, Northern Water, and Xcel Energy.

The state even has two pumped storage hydropower plants. In fact, in April 2021, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed HB21-1052, Define Hydroelectricity as Renewable Energy, concerning the inclusion of some pumped hydroelectric energy generation in the definition of “eligible energy resources” for purposes of meeting Colorado’s renewable energy standard (RES).

In addition, Denver is an easy destination to access via airplane, with nonstop flights to well over 200 airports in the U.S. and nearly 30 airports around the world.

Visit local hydropower plants with our In-the-Field Technical Tours!

At HYDROVISION International® 2022, you have the opportunity to get exclusive In-the-Field access to hydroelectric facilities and hydropower research centers.

go green bearIn addition, the Center is committed to helping protect the environment! Here are some of the ways the Center is making a change:

  • Water bottle filling stations are installed at each water fountain for a more convenient way to reuse water bottles.
  • 300kw rooftop Solar Array: Installed in 2008, the system produces approximately 400,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. This saved the equivalent of 282 metric tons (MtCO2e) of carbon dioxide emissions as compared to conventionally produced electricity, which equates to saving 31,676 gallons of gasoline or 655 barrels of oil.
  • All office, toilet, and tissue paper are post-consumer recycled content, food & beverage service ware are compostable, and all cleaning supplies are bio-renewable.
