Case Study: Sensitivity of Hydropower to Climate-induced Droughts and Implications on Investments in Southern African Power Pool
The study unpacks the role of climate-induced droughts on the generation capabilities of hydropower infrastructure and alternative investment potential to enhance redundancy in the Southern African Power Pool. This informs future financial commitments, safeguarding much-needed energy resources in the face of climate change impacts. The spatial and temporal variability of rainfall distribution and the subsequent hydrological dynamics in the five basins of interest will be approached. Recommendations on additional mechanisms to promote the sustainability of future investments will be discussed, key among them being investment in hybrid hydro and solar photovoltaic systems.
