Industry Trends and Analysis

The U.S. hydro industry is using dam safety risk analysis and dam safety risk-informed decision-making, prompted by new regulations of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Dam safety risk, as an explicit and different lens for characterizing dam asset reliability, can provide different outcomes and necessary actions than legacy methods.

The session will include the latest updates to the FERC Part 12 process and how new hydro licensing and construction might be affected by recent changes. An international perspective will be provided by the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency – ANEEL, which is responsible for approving hydropower inventory studies, assessing the projects, and granting permits for a hydropower plant construction and operation.

Session Moderated by: James Kiel
