Inverter-based Generation Allows Variable Water Flow and Power Production During Record Drought
Inverter technology allows for variable flow through turbines while maintaining power generation, even during low river flow events. Typical generator schemes require constant generator speed to maintain synchronicity with the power grid. In the summer of 2023, our watershed experienced a significant drought with river flows reaching record-low levels, effectively turning a run-of-river dam into an impoundment dam with a dead pool. Our case demonstrates that this novel scheme allows continuous power generation and water flow even during a severe drought of historic proportions.
