1F: Down but Not Out -- Living through Disasters
July 13, 2022
Room 103/105
Operations and Maintenance
Climate change or natural disaster, it doesn’t really matter what it’s called when your powerplant is involved. Presenters in this session will describe their experiences living through natural disasters of the non-cataclysmic kind: wildfires knocking out transmission lines and fiber cables, smoke obscuring/disrupting satellite phone usage, ice storms disrupting wind turbines and natural gas transmission. Recurring drought minimizes hydro contributions to load following and grid stabilization. Panicked yet? Don’t be. Come listen to resourceful and ingenious utility workers explain what the did – and what they are planning to do – to keep the lights on under the most trying weather conditions.
