Generator stability is key to successful blackstart operation or prolonged isolated or islanded operation. This paper gives a detailed overview of governor tuning for blackstart and islanded operation. A two-unit hydro powerplant case study is presented that was tuned to maintain stability while blackstarting into an islanded condition, with data from actual events for examples of successful and unsuccessful events.
