This session provides a discussion of the challenges of dam safety regulation in Brazil and the U.S. In Brazil, recent mine tailing dam failures have precipitated significant changes to national regulations. A paper by ANEEL, the Brazilian electric energy regulatory agency, presents experiences in introducing and then managing a new regulatory structure. A panel discussion will follow that debates this in the context of pending regulatory changes in the U.S. after the Oroville Dam incident.
