Description: The 600-kW A-Mill Artists Lofts Hydroelectric Project on the Mississippi River was developed to restore hydroelectric energy using the existing, historic infrastructure at the Pillsbury A-Mill Building. The building is an artist-occupied affordable housing development, and the turbine is located in the basement of the facility. The turbine generates about 75% of on-site residential demands.
St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL) is an interdisciplinary fluid mechanics research and educational facility at the College of Science and Engineering at the University of Minnesota. One focus area at the lab is water power. SAFL has a long history in hydropower research and has broadened its focus to encompass emerging water power technologies based on marine and hydrokinetic devices. The lab has unique research flumes and state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics tools.
Restrictions: All attendees should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing. There will be a lot of walking and standing. No photography or video will be allowed at the Pillsbury A-Mill facility. Photography will be allowed at the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory unless the tour guide says otherwise.
