St. Croix Falls Hydro Generation Station

Description: The 25.9-MW St. Croix Falls Hydro Generating Station features a powerhouse containing eight turbine-generator units. It was completed in 1905 on the St. Croix River (a National Scenic Riverway) along the Wisconsin-Minnesota border. This operates as partial peaking plant and is the only existing dam on the river. St. Croix Falls as built to provide electricity for the Twin Cities. A feature that separates St. Croix Falls from other hydro facilities is its S-shaped spillway, constructed as a curve to increase its crest area because the river at that spot forms a gorge through which passes a large volume of water.
Restrictions: All attendees should wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothing. Attendees should be able to walk up and down stairways. No photography or video will be allowed inside of the plant.
